Tropicana Juice carton (2024)

My wife and I joined some friends at their place for breakfast this morning and noticed the Tropicana juice carton had a picture of a Tropicana train. The engine in the image was painted orange, not CSX. I was wondering if it was a doctored image or does Tropicana have their own equipment for moving the cars around their plant? The engine looked like more of a road diesel than a switcher.

There was a thread about this when it came out. Notice the "reefer" has a loco fuel tank underneath. I don't have a carton handy (plastic container is in the fridge), but it is a real bad photoshop job.

I drink Tropicana orange juice because it taste good and it comes in by rail. And Tropicana is not ashamed of it at all! Now thats cool. It's nice to see the cartons in the store. Tropicana does not have any road power that I am aware of. I thought they had a switcher or two; however.

Union Pacific brings in 5-10 Tropicana reefers in the middle of doublestack trains to the City Of Industry in California. Sometimes the reefers are in the front of the train.

Here's a shot of the Tropicana "Juice Train" on the side panel of the carton.

Bill Watterson could have done a better job with a drawing than that miserable Photoshop job. But chances are, all consumers who aren't railfans won't notice, and probably some of the railfans won't even pay attention.

From my point of view, this artwork does it's job just fine.
The object is to illustrate a marketing point that "Tropicana has it's own train so we get fresh juice to you faster."
The art department needed to get a locomotive and a Tropicana refrigerated boxcar in that space and what they came with is fine.
Sure, it doesn't meet "Railpictures.com" criteria or the Thursday night Locomotive Tech Society standards and we all know that's a locomotive undercarriage beneath that boxcar body, but WHO CARES!!
I think Tropicana is quite cool for having done this. I also am a dedicated Tropicana customer.

Respectfully Submitted,

Tropicana also gets a much as 50% of their OJ from foreign sources, mainly Brazil where Floridas' Natural brand is 100% American. Something to think about. I prefer to support American growers in Florida; They need the money more than CSX.

The Tropicana cars are very spiffy, though....

I like Tropicana better than Florida Natural and I purchase the juice with the train on the carton and when it is the refrigerator, the train side faces out.
Tropicana my purchase juice from Brazil but at least it is not from China. A lot of apple juice comes from China so I have a hard time purchasing an American product.

I thought Tropicana had its own switch locomotives back in the 1990s at Bradenton and its old, cramped facility in South Kearny

Florida's Natural is 100% domestic, but if you live west of the Rockies, the Florida's Natural on your grocery shelves is not necessarily 100% Florida.

Tropicana says that Florida suppliers could no longer reliably meet their need for NFC (not from concentrate). The Brazilian stuff (from Sucocitrico Cutrale) going into Tropicana's Pure Premium products is still NFC.

I don't think anyone in this thread denied that likelihood. But they don't have anything that looks like that abomination on the juice carton.

By my reckoning, the only shippers that have provided locomotives for transporting their freight have been utility companies like Cleveland Electric Illuminating, Detroit Edison, and whoever it was that had the Oneida & Western units. Discounting the Maersk units and any "special" power of their ilk, have I missed anybody?
